What is Makaton?

ree

Makaton is the use of signs and symbols to help people communicate and is designed to support the development of spoken language.   Makaton signs are based on the gestures from British Sign Language. However, unlike BSL, Makaton signs are used alongside speech at all times to promote the use of speech as well as gesture. This means that eventually the use of signs and symbols can be reduced as the child develops their speech.

Studies have shown that babies have the ability to understand and communicate from about six months, but that their speech and associated motor skills are not sufficiently developed until they are at least 12mths old, which means that your child may know what they want but are unable to communicate that message.

The use of Makaton Signing can help babies and children express what they want to say, supporting their communication in many different ways.

The signs and symbols have been designed to help and support, rather than completely replace speech and writing.  You may be familiar with the BBC programme ‘Something Special’ where Mr. Tumble uses Makaton signing.
